Taking Taxis Just Got Greener Thanks to Nissan LEAF EV

Nobody would argue the fact that mustard-colored cabs are as much of a New York City staple as hot dog vendors and crowded streets. But just because the high-use of taxis isn't changing, doesn't mean the way in which those traffic-weaving vehicles operate has to stay the same. Beginning next spring, NYC will introduce six electric Nissan LEAF cabs into the mix, giving the taxicab industry a bit more eco-friendly cred.
These initial 100-percent electric Nissan cabs will be a test to see how well the green technology works in the current carpooling system. Factors such as distance or duty limitations and charging station destinations/types will need to be taken into consideration. However, this new initiative is moving fast. Mayor Bloomberg hopes to execute a plan for an all-electric cab system by sometime next year. Currently, only 375 of the 13,000 licensed NYC taxis are operating with a hybrid system but the Bloomberg says that if his plan were to find success, the city would produce the "largest, cleanest fleet of taxis anywhere on the planet."1
A pretty bold plan? Absolutely. But in the effort to reduce negative environmental impact, Mathews Nissan believes that big thinking is most always better. Plus, the city has already chosen Nissan as the EV brand to begin with and in that respect, they're already heading in the right direction.
